Gateway FX Gaming
Designed to Perform
A bold industrial design language that reflected the era’s shift toward performance-driven aesthetics.
The main surface used sharp, faceted surfaces, high-contrast color accents, and aggressive venting to visually communicate thermal capability and gaming power, moving away from the conservative gray-box look common at the time.
A grand experience.
A large 17-inch desktop-replacement form factor allowed designers to emphasize scale, with sculpted speaker grilles, illuminated accents, and a forward-leaning stance that suggested speed even at rest. Despite its assertive styling, the layout balanced usability — wide keyboard spacing, clearly defined control zones, and accessible I/O placement — showing an early attempt to merge enthusiast gaming identity with more mainstream industrial design refinement.
The screen can be laid completely flat, allowing the user to place the laptop in front of a larger monitor without the screen cause any overlapping.
FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION
A bold reimagining of a performance driven brand.
CMF Design
To showcase the premium look and feel, the design leveraged brushed aluminum inlay, in addition to the simulated carbon fiber finish, with state-of-the-art IMR technology at that time, while everything else was plastic painted in 50 shades of gray.
