MediaPhone concept

the vision

This concept was created by Michael Hong in 2005, 4 years prior to founding Tandem.

It was created for Samsung, at a time when most of Samsung’s smartphone models were exploring features of flipping mechanical QWERTY keyboard.

This design took a different path, use the phone screen as the main UI, with the focus of a mini joystick, with the keyboard hidden when not used. This design reduced the phone length by half, making it ultra compact.

The keypad is usually hidden, under the main screen. If needed, the user can slide it out and have full access.

Samsung took this design concept yet made the final model with a fixed QWERTY keypad.

Connecting the dots…

This faceted “Diamond” design language was applied to the production model which came out in 2006, Samsung SGH-i320. It was the foundational design that influenced the Blackjack line, especially in terms of form factor and business-first focus.
