Classic American Drive-In Experience
Sonic’s identity centers on drive-in ordering — you park in a stall and order through an intercom, and food is brought to your car.
Many locations still feature roller-skating carhops, reinforcing a nostalgic 1950s Americana vibe.
Reddit users often describe the brand as having a “vintage 1950s vibe” with carhop service and drive-in stalls.
This next-gen Sonic ordering station blends modern functionality with retro-inspired aesthetics, capturing the brand’s nostalgic charm while supporting an engaging, story-driven user experience.

SONIC is known for:
Eating in your car (“car picnic” style)
Retro branding
Playful, indulgent positioning vs. health-focused fast food
Hardware (intercoms, menu boards, canopy lighting) acts as branded industrial design.
The design features clean, rounded forms and bold color accents that echo the American Golden Age and Sonic’s classic visual language, while a streamlined digital interface supports fast, intuitive ordering. Being the one of the first touch based ordering stations, this design is purpose-built to feel both familiar and futuristic, this unit enhances brand storytelling right at the point of interaction.
It's pretty incredible when you pull into one of these Sonic restaurants and realize that the scene perfectly matches the renderings you crafted back in 2011...
These establishments must be relatively new, although 2011 isn't exactly 1955...
I was there to finally sample the product we meticulously designed, opting for a milkshake. It turned out to be one of the best I've ever had, even if the quintessential delivery person on skates wasn't around...
I can't help but eagerly anticipate the day when perhaps robotic servers on roller skates will make their debut.
Nevertheless, witnessing our collaborative creation for Sonic (in partnership with Delphi Display) fills me with immense satisfaction.
As the saying goes, seeing is believing, or perhaps it's believing that sets the stage for what's to come?
